Journal Post #1 :)

 Hiya!

My name is Sammiiy Spence. I'm a full-time 911 dispatcher and full-time student. I have three corgis and four cats. Some fun facts about me are that I read around 300-350 books a year, my favorite color is pink, and I have 40 tattoos (and counting)!

I have limited experience with technology in an educational setting. I'm mostly limited to using Canvas, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Google Docs. Even just using those, though, I've still mostly just used Word and Outlook; not many of my classes have needed PowerPoints. I've used Google Docs to work on group projects, such as big papers. At work, we use Excel a lot, so I'm looking forward to using Excel in this class, so I can translate those skills there, too!

My personal learning network is mostly work related. A lot of 911 dispatchers communicate through Facebook groups and other forums, like APCO (Associated Public-Safety Communications Officials) email groups or other sub-chats through the website's forums. Aside from web-based communication, I, of course, have my colleagues within my own communications center to lean on, or my neighboring agencies that are just a phone call (or radio transmission) away for another other questions. As a 911-dispatcher, learning never stops. Technology is constantly changing and evolving, computer aided dispatch (CAD) systems are updated, or policies change. Being able to learn and ask questions from other dispatchers from across the world, another state, a different agency, or the person right next to you can be immeasurably helpful.
