Journal Entry #7
For this assignment, I took to my own alma mater! I looked at my choir's website, since I was heavily involved in choir. On this website, you're able to see the Chorus Handbook and the schedule for rehearsals, concerts, and assessments. The Seminole County School Board has their own website with a login and I would imagine that having a parental/student/teacher login for that would amass a lot more information regarding contact information or scheduling for the different choirs across the county, rather than just Winter Springs High. Aside from chorus, there's also the athletics webpages of the site. There, you are able to find the students on each team as well as their schedule.
As a future educator, I think that using social media, email, and projectors will end up being a big part of my teaching methods. I think social media is an important way to keep students engaged and updated with their information. They're on the websites anyway, so adding one account to follow to make sure they're up to date on their homework and other assignments shouldn't be an issue! Email is more or less a given, in my opinion, because that's another web-based media that all, if not most, students use daily anyway. Projectors, PowerPoint, Word, and other Microsoft applications will be a big part of my classroom because students need to be able to see! I'm not a big fan of print outs (save the trees), so I think using PowerPoints and projectors to let the students take their own notes is important.
I liked using Canvas because it was allowed all of the group mates to change the Wiki page without needing an outside source (though we used one anyway - Google Docs). I didn't like that the table was a bit harder to make than it would have been in Microsoft Word or in Google Docs because the parameters for the table only goes up to 10 rows, so you have to manually add rows, but that's not really a big deal. One thing I do prefer about Google Docs over Canvas group pages is that Google Docs allows you to see who made what changes, where Canvas doesn't award you the same benefit, it only tells you who made the most recent change. I think using Canvas in a K-12 setting would be beneficial because it's likely something already integrated into the classroom, so the students don't need access to anything additional (like Google Docs/a Gmail account or Word) and is pretty easy to maneuver once you get the hang of it.
