Journal Post #5
Hiya!
I've been using Instagram primarily as a part of my PLN for this class, but I did also make a Twitter/X account for this class. As such, I've been monitoring both feeds for different tips and things to make me think a little more thoroughly about education. Following current educators has been beneficial because its given me ideas on classroom organization and lesson plans! @thedaringenglishteacher on Instagram has been particularly interesting to follow because she posts a lot of funny stories about classroom interactions and lesson plans in her English classes for her high school classes. Twitter/X could be useful in the future to connect with other teachers, students, or parents for things like field trip information, general classroom information (instead of sending out newsletters), or just keeping fresh ideas. When I was in high school, we had a Twitter account for each different chorus class to keep up with our different rehearsal schedules, so I think that something similar to that would be beneficial for parents and students to keep up with.
The digital divide can affect student success because it may restrict their access to things like Google or Word, making it difficult to complete research papers, or Canvas. It can be caused by poverty or location for some rural students. As a teacher, to be sensitive to this issue, I would take a paper poll at the start of the semester (so that other students don't see answers) to see which students may need more help than others when it comes to computers. For those students, I would ensure that they were allotted some extra time in the computer labs, if possible, so that they have more opportunities to get their assignments done. If that's not possible, then I would make sure that I keep their situations in mind when grading papers in the event that they have to be hand written or something to that effect.
In my future classroom, I would like to use Word and PowerPoint. I think these two are the most beneficial for students because they're likely the ones they'll use the most often long-term, so it's best to get them well-acquainted early. Using these with regularity would help the students get more familiar with them, so that when they get to college, they are able to proficiently write papers, create PowerPoints, or make newsletters in their future educational technology classes. Ideally, I'd also switch them between MLA and APA citation so that they're also familiar with both of them for their futures, too.
